Ames-Test
Der Ames-Test ist eine weit verbreitete Methode, die Bakterien verwendet, um zu testen, ob eine gegebene Chemikalie Krebs verursachen kann. Formaler ist es ein biologischer Assay zur Beurteilung des mutagenen Potentials von chemischen Verbindungen. Ein positiver Test zeigt, dass die Chemikalie mutagen ist und daher als Karzinogen wirken kann, weil Krebs oft mit Mutation verbunden ist. Der Test dient als schneller und bequemer Assay zur Abschätzung des karzinogenen Potentials einer Verbindung, da Standardkarzinogen-Assays an Mäusen und Ratten zeitaufwändig und teuer sind. Allerdings sind falsch-positiv und falsch-negativen bekannt. Das Verfahren wurde in einer Reihe von Papieren in den frühen 1970er Jahren von Bruce Ames und seine Gruppe an der University of California, Berkeley beschrieben.
