Die Kraft des Magnetismus wird durch magnetische Momente bestimmt. Die Curie-Temperatur ist der kritische Punkt, an dem die intrinsischen magnetischen Momente eines Materials die Richtung ändern. Magnetische Momente sind permanente Dipolmomente innerhalb des Atoms, die aus Elektronendrehimpuls und Spin stammen. Materialien haben unterschiedliche Strukturen von intrinsischen magnetischen Momenten, die von der Temperatur abhängen. Bei der Curie-Temperatur eines Materials wechseln die intrinsischen magnetischen Momente die Richtung. Der permanente Magnetismus wird durch die Ausrichtung der magnetischen Momente verursacht und der induzierte Magnetismus wird erzeugt, wenn ungeordnete magnetische Momente gezwungen sind, sich in einem angelegten Magnetfeld auszurichten. Zum Beispiel ändern sich die geordneten magnetischen Momente und werden bei der Curie-Temperatur ungeordnet. Höhere Temperaturen machen Magneten schwächer, da der spontane Magnetismus nur unterhalb der Curie-Temperatur auftritt.

In physics and materials science, the Curie temperature, or Curie point, is the temperature where a material's permanent magnetism changes to induced magnetism. The force of magnetism is determined by magnetic moments. The Curie temperature is the critical point where a material's intrinsic magnetic moments change direction. Magnetic moments are permanent dipole moments within the atom which originate from electrons' angular momentum and spin. Materials have different structures of intrinsic magnetic moments that depend on temperature. At a material's Curie Temperature those intrinsic magnetic moments change direction. Permanent magnetism is caused by the alignment of magnetic moments and induced magnetism is created when disordered magnetic moments are forced to align in an applied magnetic field. For example, the ordered magnetic moments change and become disordered at the Curie Temperature. Higher temperatures make magnets weaker as spontaneous magnetism only occurs below the Curie Temperature.
