Excimer
Ein Excimer ist ein kurzlebiges dimeres oder heterodimeres Molekül, das aus zwei Spezies gebildet wird, von denen mindestens eines eine Valenzschale durch Elektronen vollständig gefüllt hat. In diesem Fall ist die Bildung von Molekülen nur möglich, wenn ein solches Atom in einem elektronisch angeregten Zustand ist. Heteronukleare Moleküle und Moleküle, die mehr als zwei Arten haben, werden auch als Exciplexmoleküle bezeichnet. Excimer sind oft zweiatomig und bestehen aus zwei Atomen oder Molekülen, die sich nicht binden würden, wenn beide im Grundzustand waren. Die Lebensdauer eines Excimers ist sehr kurz, in der Reihenfolge der Nanosekunden. Die Bindung einer größeren Anzahl von angeregten Atomen bildet Rydberg-Materie-Cluster, deren Lebensdauer viele Sekunden überschreiten kann.
