Diskette
Eine Diskette oder Diskette ist ein Plattenspeichermedium, das aus einer Scheibe aus dünnem und flexiblem magnetischem Speichermedium besteht, die in einem rechteckigen, mit Gewebe ausgekleideten Kunststoffträger versehen ist, der Staubpartikel entfernt. Disketten werden von einem Diskettenlaufwerk gelesen und geschrieben. Disketten, anfänglich als 8-Zoll-Medien und später in 5¼-Zoll- und 3½-Zoll-Größen, waren eine allgegenwärtige Form der Datenspeicherung und Austausch von Mitte der 1970er Jahre bis in die 2000er Jahre. Bis 2010 wurden Computer-Motherboards selten mit Diskettenlaufwerksunterstützung hergestellt; 3½-Zoll-Disketten können mit einem externen USB-Diskettenlaufwerk verwendet werden, aber USB-Laufwerke für 5¼-Zoll-, 8-Zoll- und Nicht-Standard-Disketten sind selten oder nicht vorhanden, und diese Formate müssen in der Regel von alten Geräten gehandhabt werden. Während Diskettenlaufwerke noch einige begrenzte Verwendungszwecke haben, vor allem bei Legacy-Industrie-Computer-Equipment, wurden sie durch Datenspeicher-Methoden mit viel größerer Kapazität, wie USB-Flash-Laufwerke, tragbare externe Festplatten, optische Discs, Speicherkarten und Computer-Netzwerken ersetzt .
