Christoph Willibald Gluck
Christoph Willibald Ritter von Gluck war ein Opernkomponist der frühen Klassik. Nach vielen Jahren auf dem Habsburger Hof in Wien brachte Gluck die praktische Reform der dramaturgischen Praktiken der Oper hervor, die viele Intellektuelle im Laufe der Jahre kennengelernt hatten. Mit einer Reihe von radikalen neuen Werken in den 1760er Jahren, darunter Orfeo Ed Euridice und Alceste, brach er den Würgegriff, den die Metastasian Oper seria für einen Großteil des Jahrhunderts genossen hatte. Der starke Einfluss der französischen Oper in diesen Werken ermutigte Gluck, nach Paris zu ziehen, was er im November 1773 tat. Als er die Traditionen der italienischen Oper und das französische Genre in eine neue Synthese verwandelte, schrieb Gluck acht Opern für die Pariser Bühnen. Einer der letzten von diesen, Iphigénie en Tauride, war ein großer Erfolg und wird allgemein als seine schönste Arbeit anerkannt. Obwohl er sehr populär war und weithin mit einer Revolution in der französischen Oper gutgeschrieben wurde, war Glucks Beherrschung der Pariser Opernszene niemals absolut, und nach dem armen Empfang seines Echo et Narcisse verließ er Paris in Ekel und kehrte nach Wien zurück, um zu leben Der Rest seines Lebens.
