Ulex ist eine Gattung blühender Pflanzen in der Familie Fabaceae. Die Gattung umfasst etwa 20 Arten von dornigen immergrünen Sträuchern in der Unterfamilie Faboideae der Erbsenfamilie Fabaceae. Die Arten stammen aus Teilen Westeuropas und Nordwestafrikas mit der Mehrheit der Arten in Iberia. Gorse ist eng mit den Besen verwandt, und wie sie, hat grüne Stängel und sehr kleine Blätter und ist angepasst, um wachsende Bedingungen zu trocknen. Allerdings unterscheidet es sich in seiner extremen Dornigkeit, die Triebe werden in verzweigte Dornen verwandelt, die 1-4 Zentimeter lang sind, die fast die Blätter als die funktionierenden photosynthetischen Organe der Pflanze ersetzen. Die Blätter der jungen Pflanzen sind trifoliert, aber in reifen Pflanzen werden sie zu Schuppen oder kleinen Stacheln reduziert. Alle Arten haben gelbe Blüten, meist auffällige, einige mit einer sehr langen Blütezeit.
