In der organischen Chemie ist ein Alkan oder Paraffin ein gesättigter Kohlenwasserstoff. Alkane bestehen nur aus Wasserstoff- und Kohlenstoffatomen und alle Bindungen sind Einfachbindungen. Acyclische Alkane haben die allgemeine chemische Formel CnH2n + 2. Alkane gehören zu einer homologen Reihe von organischen Verbindungen, in denen sich die Mitglieder durch eine Molekülmasse von 14,03u unterscheiden. Es gibt zwei Hauptquellen: Rohöl und Erdgas. Jedes Kohlenstoffatom hat 4 Bindungen, und jedes Wasserstoffatom ist mit einem Kohlenstoffatom verbunden. Eine Reihe von verknüpften Kohlenstoffatomen ist als Kohlenstoff-Skelett oder Kohlenstoff-Grundgerüst bekannt. Die Anzahl der Kohlenstoffatome wird verwendet, um die Größe des Alkans zu definieren. Eine Alkylgruppe, die im allgemeinen mit dem Symbol R abgekürzt ist, ist eine funktionelle Gruppe oder Seitenkette, die wie ein Alkan ausschließlich aus einfach gebundenen Kohlenstoff- und Wasserstoffatomen, beispielsweise einer Methyl- oder Ethylgruppe, besteht.
