Kaffraria war der beschreibende Name, der dem südöstlichen Teil des heutigen östlichen Kaps von Südafrika gegeben wurde. Kaffraria, d.h. das Land der Kaffern, ist nicht mehr eine offizielle Bezeichnung. Die Bezirke, die jetzt als König Williams Stadt und Ostlondon bekannt waren, wurden von den Briten früh annektiert und wurden so als britische Kaffraria bekannt. Alle verbleibenden Xhosa-Territorien jenseits des Kei-Flusses, südlich des Drakensberg-Gebirges und bis zur Natal-Grenze, blieben länger länger und wurden als Kaffraria bekannt. Als geographischer Begriff wurde es später verwendet, um die transkeischen Territorien der Kap-Provinzen anzugeben, die die vier Verwaltungsabteilungen von Transkei, Pondoland, Tembuland und Griqualand Ost umfassten, die in verschiedenen Perioden zwischen 1879 und 1894 in die Kapkolonie aufgenommen wurden. Sie hatten eine Gesamtfläche von 18.310 m², und eine Bevölkerung von 834.644, von denen 16.777 waren Weiße. Ohne Pondoland - nicht vor 1904 gezählt - hatte sich die Bevölkerung von 487.364 im Jahre 1891 auf 631.887 im Jahre 1904 erhöht.

Kaffraria was the descriptive name given to the southeast part of what is today the Eastern Cape of South Africa. Kaffraria, i.e. the land of the Kaffirs, is no longer an official designation. The districts now known as King Williams Town and East London were annexed by the British early on, and were thus known as British Kaffraria. All of the remaining Xhosa territory beyond the Kei River, south of the Drakensberg Mountains and as far as the Natal frontier, remained independent for longer and was known as Kaffraria proper. As a geographical term it was later used to indicate the Transkeian territories of the Cape provinces comprising the four administrative divisions of Transkei, Pondoland, Tembuland and Griqualand East, incorporated into Cape Colony at various periods between 1879 and 1894. They had a total area of 18,310 m²., and a population of 834,644, of whom 16,777 were whites. Excluding Pondoland - not counted prior to 1904 - the population had increased from 487,364 in 1891 to 631,887 in 1904.
