Ara
Macaws sind lang-tailed, oft bunte New World Papageien. Von den vielen verschiedenen Psittacidae-Gattungen werden sechs als Aras klassifiziert: Ara, Anodorhynchus, Cyanopsitta, Primolius, Orthopsittaca und Diopsittaca. Früher wurden die Mitglieder der Gattung Primolius in Propyrrhura gestellt, aber die erstere ist in Übereinstimmung mit den ICZN-Regeln korrekt. Aras stammen aus Mittelamerika, Südamerika und früher in der Karibik. Die meisten Arten sind mit Wäldern, vor allem Regenwäldern, verbunden, aber andere bevorzugen Wald- oder Savannen-ähnliche Lebensräume. Proportionale größere Schnäbel, lange Schwänze und relativ nackte, helle, mediale Bereiche unterscheiden Aras. Manchmal ist der Gesichts-Patch bei einigen Arten kleiner und auf einen gelben Fleck um die Augen und einen zweiten Fleck in der Nähe der Basis des Schnabels in den Mitgliedern der Gattung Anodorhynchus beschränkt. Ein Macaw's Gesichtsfeder Muster ist so einzigartig wie ein Fingerabdruck. Die größten Aras sind die Hyazinthen, Buffons und Grün-Winged Aras.
