Eine Mantelfeder ist eine gesetzte thermische Abnormalität, bei der heiße Felsen an der Kern-Mantel-Grenze verkehren und durch den Erdmantel aufsteigt, der in der Erdkruste zu einem Diapir wird. Solche Federn wurden 1971 aufgerufen, um vulkanische Gebiete zu erklären, die von der damals neuen Theorie der Plattentektonik nicht als notwendig erachtet wurden. Einige dieser Vulkane liegen weit von tektonischen Plattengrenzen, z. B. Hawaii. Andere stellen einen ungewöhnlich großvolumigen Vulkanismus dar, ob auf Plattengrenzen, z. B. Island oder Basaltfluten wie die dekkanischen oder sibirischen Fallen. Die derzeit aktiven vulkanischen Zentren sind als "Hot Spots" bekannt. Insbesondere wurde der Begriff, dass Mantelfedern relativ zueinander fixiert und an der Kernmantelgrenze verankert sind, eine natürliche Erklärung für die zeitverlaufenden Ketten älterer Vulkane, die sich von einigen "Hotspots" erstreckten, gegeben. Die Hypothese von Mantelfedern ist nicht allgemein akzeptiert, weil viele ihrer Vorhersagen nicht durch geophysikalische oder petrologische Beobachtung bestätigt worden sind. Infolgedessen ist es bei vielen Gruppen in den Geowissenschaften weniger populär geworden.

A mantle plume is a posited thermal abnormality where hot rock nucleates at the core-mantle boundary and rises through the Earth's mantle becoming a diapir in the Earth's crust. Such plumes were invoked in 1971 to explain volcanic regions that were not thought to be explicable by the then-new theory of plate tectonics. Some of these volcanoes lie far from tectonic plate boundaries, e.g., Hawaii. Others represent unusually large-volume volcanism whether on plate boundaries, e.g., Iceland or basalt floods like the Deccan or Siberian traps. The currently active volcanic centers are known as "hot spots". In particular, the concept that mantle plumes are fixed relative to one another, and anchored at the core-mantle boundary, was thought to provide a natural explanation for the time-progressive chains of older volcanoes seen extending out from some "hot spots". The hypothesis of mantle plumes is not universally accepted because many of its predictions have not been confirmed by geophysical or petrological observation.. As a result, it has become less popular with many groups in the geological sciences.
