Vladimir Wladimirowitsch Putin (russisch: Владимир Владимирович Путин, IPA: (hören), geboren am 7. Oktober 1952) ist seit dem 7. Mai 2012 Präsident von Russland. Er war zuvor von 2000 bis 2008 Präsident und Präsident von Russland Bis 2000 und wieder von 2008 bis 2012. Während seiner letzten Amtszeit als Premierminister war er auch der Vorsitzende der Vereinten Russland politische Partei. Seit 16 Jahren ist Putin als Offizier im KGB tätig und stieg auf den Rang eines Oberstleutnants, bevor er sich 1991 in seine Heimat in Sankt Petersburg zurückzog. Er zog 1996 nach Moskau und schloss sich der Regierung von Präsident Boris Jelzin an, wo er schnell aufstand, Präsident am 31. Dezember 1999 zu werden, als Jelzin unerwartet zurücktrat. Putin gewann die folgenden 2000 Präsidentschaftswahlen und wurde im Jahr 2004 wiedergewählt. Aufgrund der verfassungsrechtlich vorgeschriebenen Begriffsgrenzen war Putin nicht berechtigt, für eine dritte aufeinander folgende Amtszeit im Jahr 2008 zu laufen. Dmitri Medwedew gewann die Präsidentschaftswahl 2008 und ernannte Putin als Premierminister, Beginn einer Periode der sogenannten "Tandemokratie".
