Samar
Samar ist eine Insel im Visayas, innerhalb der zentralen Philippinen. Die Insel ist in drei Provinzen unterteilt: Samar-Provinz, Nord-Samar-Provinz und Ost-Samar-Provinz. Diese drei Provinzen, zusammen mit den Provinzen auf den nahe gelegenen Inseln Leyte und Biliran sind Teil der östlichen Visayas Region. Es ist die drittgrößte Insel in den Philippinen, nach Luzon und Mindanao. Samar ist die östlichste Insel im Visayas. Die Insel ist von Leyte durch die San Juanico Strait getrennt, die an ihrer engsten Stelle nur etwa zwei Kilometer entfernt ist. Diese Straße wird von der San Juanico Brücke überquert. Samar liegt südöstlich der Halbinsel Bicol auf Luzon, der größten Insel des Landes. Die San Bernardino Strait trennt die beiden. Im Süden von Samar ist der Leyte-Golf, der Ort der Schlacht am Golf von Leyte, einer der entscheidendsten Seeschlachten während des Zweiten Weltkrieges. Der Golf öffnet sich in das philippinische Meer, das östlich von Samar liegt und Teil des Pazifischen Ozeans ist.
