Tacheometrie ist ein System der schnellen Vermessung, bei dem die Positionen, sowohl horizontal als auch vertikal, von Punkten auf der Erdoberfläche relativ zueinander ohne Verwendung einer Kette oder eines Bandes oder eines separaten Nivellierinstruments bestimmt werden. Die gewöhnlichen Methoden der Vermessung mit einem Theodolit-, Ketten- und Nivellierinstrument sind recht zufriedenstellend, wenn der Boden von Hindernissen ziemlich klar ist und nicht sehr steif ist, aber es wird sehr schwerfällig, wenn der Boden mit Busch bedeckt ist oder von Schluchten zerbrochen wird. Kettenmessungen werden dann langsam und schwerwiegend beeinträchtigt; Auch die Nivellierung wird bei hoher Geschwindigkeit nachteilig fortgesetzt, allerdings ohne ernsthaften Verlust an Genauigkeit. Diese Schwierigkeiten führten zur Einführung der Tachymetrie, bei der anstelle des noch früher eingesetzten Pole ein Personal, das einem Personal entspricht, verwendet wird. Tacheometry, is a system of rapid surveying, by which the positions, both horizontal and vertical, of points on the earth surface relatively to one another are determined without using a chain or tape or a separate levelling instrument. The ordinary methods of surveying with a theodolite, chain, and levelling instrument are fairly satisfactory when the ground is pretty clear of obstructions and not very precipitous, but it becomes extremely cumbersome when the ground is covered with bush, or broken up by ravines. Chain measurements then become slow and liable to considerable error; the levelling, too, is carried on at great disadvantage in point of speed, though without serious loss of accuracy. These difficulties led to the introduction of tacheometry, in which, instead of the pole formerly employed to mark a point, a staff similar to a level staff is used. This is marked with heights from the foot, and is graduated according to the form of tacheometer in use. The azimuth angle is determined as formerly.
