Negus - der historische und politische Titel der Herrscher Äthiopiens während der Monarchie. Einer der ältesten feudalen äthiopischen Titel, weil er bereits in V-I in p.n.e. Seit der Zeit des Aksum-Staates wurde es später von den christlichen Herrschern Äthiopiens übernommen und für die Neuzeit genutzt. Negus, meistens nur formell, war dem Kaiser unterworfen, der den Titel "Negusa Negast", dh "König der Könige", trug, der eigentlich ein unabhängiger Herrscher war. In der Periode der starken imperialen Macht in Äthiopien nahm die Macht des Negus ab und es wuchs in Zeiten der Schwächung. Später konnte der Kaiser den Herrschern von Szeua, Gonder, Tigra und Godjam den Titel negus gewähren. Die letzte Negerkrönung fand 1928 statt, als der Titel von Tafari Makonnen übernommen wurde, der unter dem Namen Haile Selassie bekannt war.

Jeden z najstarszych feudalnych tytułów etiopskich, bowiem był w użyciu już w V-I w. p.n.e. od czasów państwa Aksum, został następnie przejęty przez chrześcijańskich władców Etiopii i był używany do czasów współczesnych. Negus, najczęściej tylko formalnie, podlegał cesarzowi noszącemu tytuł negusa negast, tj. "król królów", będąc faktycznie samodzielnym władcą. W okresie silnej władzy cesarskiej w Etiopii malała władza negusa, rosła zaś w okresach jej osłabienia. W późniejszym okresie cesarz mógł przyznawać tytuł negusa władcom prowincji Szeua, Gonder, Tigra oraz Godżam. Ostatnia koronacja na negusa odbyła się w roku 1928, kiedy to tytuł ten przybrał ras Tafari Makonnen, znany pod imieniem Haile Selassie.
