Aspergillus

Gießkannenschimmel

The watering can mold is a genus of molds with aspergill-shaped spore carriers, which covers over 350 species. They are globally widespread saprobies, which live predominantly in dead, decomposing organic matter and have a considerable share of the material cycle in the ecosystem of the earth. However, some species are pathogens which can affect humans, various animals or plants. Watering can molds have a pleomorphic development cycle, they have a sexual shape and an asexual shape. Many species, however, belong to the so-called Fungi imperfecti, which means that it is unknown whether they grow exclusively asexually or the phase of sexual multiplication is still undiscovered. Only asexual forms are referred to as Aspergillus; at best known sexual forms are given a different generic name, which is then classified into the usual system of the tubers into the family of the Trichocomaceae.
