Baster

Baster are families born of relationships between Nama women and Buren in South Africa. The Baster in 1994 with 39,000 people about 2.5 percent of the Namibian population. Their language is mostly Afrikaans. Its traditional tribal territory is located around the town of Rehoboth. Since the independence of Namibia, the Basters have no longer enjoyed a special legal status as the only traditional grouping. However, as before 1990, their internal administration is in the hands of a "Baster council", headed by the Kapteine. Their culture has traditionally been afrikaans and evangelical-Lutheran. The Rehoboth Basters are members of the Unrepresented Nations and Peoples Organization and continue to regard their historic tribe as an independent area.
