Bucchero

Bucchero

Bucchero is a genus of black, externally shining clay vessels which, from the middle of the 7th century to the beginning of the 4th century BC, Were produced by the Etruscans. To begin with, thin-walled vessels, the so-called Bucchero sottile, were often decorated with incised decorations, which, by their form and brilliancy, imitated metal vessels. In the 6th century BC, Followed by the coarser bucchero pesante, which was often distorted by the use of fashionable jewelery and stamp reliefs. The Italian word "Bucchero" derives from the Portuguese word "bucáro", with which the conquerors of South America called the found black-gray ceramics. Towards the end of the 19th century, the word was borrowed from Italian, where it became a synonym for "gray-black" as a designation for a dark dish imported from Portugal. From modern archeology this term was adopted for typical Etruscan ceramics. The Etruscan Bucchero was found on the Gallic-Iberian coast, Carthage, Magna Graecia, Greece, Lower Egypt, Sardinia, Sicily and Cyprus.
