Drongos

The Drongos are a songbird family that is common in tropical and subtropical regions of Africa, Asia and Australia. The family includes 2 genera and 24 species. Drongos are 18-36 cm tall and usually have black or dark gray plumage, their legs are short. A striking feature is the usually clearly bifurcated tail, which in some runs into two striking decorative feathers. Drongos mainly eat insects, they live in the bush or in open forests. They lay 2-4 eggs in the nests high in trees. Drongos are aggressive and fearless, they also attack larger birds of prey when it comes to defending their nests. Die Drongos sind eine Singvogelfamilie, die in tropischen und subtropischen Regionen von Afrika, Asien und Australien verbreitet sind. Die Familie umfasst 2 Gattungen und 24 Arten. Drongos werden 18–36 cm groß und haben meist schwarzes oder dunkelgraues Gefieder, ihre Beine sind kurz. Auffälliges Merkmal ist der meist deutlich gegabelte Schwanz, der bei einigen in zwei auffällige Schmuckfedern ausläuft. Drongos fressen überwiegend Insekten, sie leben im Busch oder in offen Wäldern. Sie legen 2–4 Eier in den hoch in Bäumen gelegenen Nestern. Drongos sind aggressiv und angstlos, sie attackieren auch größere Greifvögel, wenn es um die Verteidigung ihrer Nester geht.
