Gastrolith

Gastroliths or stomach stones are hard objects in the digestive tract of animals. In the narrower sense, gastroliths refer to stones that have been swallowed by vertebrate animals and are or are in the stomach. Among today's living animals is the behavior of swallowing stones, especially of birds, crocodiles and seals. There are fossils of dinosaurs such as the sauropods or other reptiles, such as the Tangasaurids from the Perm, fossil crocodiles and Plesiosaurs, which are found in the stomach area of the skeleton stomach stones. The function of the stones has hitherto only been completely clarified in plant-eating birds. The swallowed stones, which are also referred to as "grit" or "grains", are used in the muscular stomach to crush the food. The Stein-Auerhuhn, for example, is necessarily dependent on Gastrolithen and already Dunenjunge take this up. In the winter, the "Stein-Auerhuhn" feeds mainly on the buds of the larch. These shoots have a thick bark and cambrium layer.
