glial cell

Gliazelle

Glial cells is a collective term for cells which are structurally and functionally detachable from the nerve cells in the nervous tissue. The discoverer of the glial cells, Rudolf Virchow, assumed support and holding function in the middle of the 19th century and gave the cells the name glial cells, derived from the Greek word glia for "glue". By means of different silver impregnation by Santiago Ramón y Cajal, Pío del Río Hortega and Camillo Golgi, they were further classified at the end of the 19th century. According to current knowledge, the glial cells form a supporting framework for the nerve cells and ensure the mutual electrical isolation of the nerve cells. However, recent findings have shown that glial cells play a key role in the transport of substances and liquids, as well as in the maintenance of homeostasis in the brain, and are involved in the process of information processing, storage and forwarding. Almost all glia cells, like the whole nervous tissue, have their origin in the ectodermal germ cell, only the microglia is of mesodermal origin. About half of the cells in the human brain are glial cells.
