Heterodontie

Heterodontia is the term for the presence of differently formed dental groups in a dentition. This is typical for the mammals, so they mostly have a differentiated dentition, canines, premolars and molars. The Amnioten line of the Synapsida, which are the mammals, is characterized by an ever-stronger formation of heterodontia. Some extinct archosaurs, such as Notosuchia or heterodontosaurids, also exhibit heterodontic dentures. In contrast to heterodontia, homodontia is common in many reptiles but also in tooth whales because they do not treat the food in the oral cavity but swallow without chewing.
