Interurban

Interurban

Interurban is a term used in the English-speaking area for a transport connection between urban areas. In America, this is understood as a mixed form of overland tramway and subway, which is led to the cost savings in densely built-up area also on roads and in weakly developed areas predominantly on own track body. The first interurbans were built from 1880, but most were built between 1900 and 1908. After this, only a few new interurbans were put into operation. After the end of the First World War the decline began, triggered by the early mass motorization in the USA. The great depression in the early 1930s led to the closure of most networks, and only a few stretches have survived until 1970. In the case of Interurbans, heavier rolling stock is used than in the case of road lanes, and there are stronger links to the normal railroad. Interurbans are mainly used for transporting people and are usually electrified. They are the most suited to the city or the Karlsruhe model.
