Kolophon was one of the largest cities in the small Asian region of Ionia in ancient Greece. It lay at the present village Değirmendere in the Turkish administrative district İzmir, between İzmir, the ancient Smyrna and Ephesos, north of the harbor town Notion. As one of the mother cities of the Ionians, Kolophon was part of the Ionian League. Thirteen kilometers south of Colophon was the famous Oracles of Klaros. The needle trees around Kolophon provided the resin rosin, which at that time was still used today for the stringing of the arches of stringed instruments. The city was supposedly founded by two sons of Kodros, king of Athens. Their most famous sons are the philosopher Xenophanes, the poet Mimnermos and the painter Apelles. Kolophon was also one of the Ionian cities that competed to be Homer's birthplace. Kolophon was considered one of the richest cities of Ionia in the archaic period and was compared with the sub-Italian Sybaris, but lost its prosperity largely in the classical period. After 479 v. The city became a member of the Attic Sea; 430 v. Chr.

Sie lag beim heutigen Dorf Değirmendere im türkischen Verwaltungsbezirk İzmir, zwischen İzmir, dem antiken Smyrna und Ephesos, nördlich der Hafenstadt Notion. Als eine der Mutterstädte der Ionier war Kolophon Teil des Ionischen Bundes. Dreizehn Kilometer südlich von Kolophon lag das berühmte Orakel von Klaros. Die Nadelbäume um Kolophon lieferten das Harz Kolophonium, das damals wie heute für die Bespannung der Bögen von Streichinstrumenten verwendet wird. Die Stadt wurde angeblich von zwei Söhnen des Kodros, dem König von Athen, gegründet. Ihre berühmtesten Söhne sind der Philosoph Xenophanes, der Dichter Mimnermos und der Maler Apelles. Kolophon war auch eine der ionischen Städte, die darum konkurrierten, Geburtsort Homers gewesen zu sein. Kolophon galt in archaischer Zeit als eine der reichsten Städte Ioniens und wurde mit dem unteritalischen Sybaris verglichen, büßte ihren Wohlstand aber in klassischer Zeit weitgehend ein. Nach 479 v. Chr. wurde die Stadt Mitglied im attischen Seebund; 430 v. Chr.
