In rodents, the yoke-bosom masseter design refers to the group-specific manifestation of the measuring musculus combined with transformations on the cranium, which relate in particular to the formation of a bowel plate and the shape and size of the foramen infraorbitale at the anterior end of the zygomatic arch. The protrogomorphic, the sciuromorphous, the hystricomorphic and the myomorphous type are distinguished. In the protrogomorphic type, the mass muscle remains unchanged. In the case of the sciuromorphous type, however, its external part protrudes up to the snout region; in the case of the hystricomorphic type, its median portion passes through the foramen infraorbitale, and the myomorphic type combines the transformations of the sciuromorphous and hystricomorphic types. The sciuromorphous, the hystricomorphous and the myomorphic type served as a basis for the division of the rodents into subdivisions. However, they have been acquired several times independently of each other and are now only used as important descriptive terms without systematic meaning.

Der Jochbogen-Masseter-Bau bezeichnet bei Nagetieren die gruppenspezifische Ausprägung des Massetermuskels verbunden mit Umgestaltungen am Schädel, die insbesondere die Ausbildung einer Jochbogenplatte und die Form und Größe des Foramen infraorbitale am Vorderende des Jochbogens betreffen. Unterschieden werden der protrogomorphe, der sciuromorphe, der hystricomorphe und der myomorphe Typ. Beim protrogomorphen Typ bleibt der Massetermuskel unverändert. Beim sciuromorphen Typ schiebt sich sein äußerer Anteil dagegen bis zur Schnauzengegend vor, beim hystricomorphen Typ greift sein mittlerer Anteil durch das Foramen infraorbitale hindurchtretend auf die Schnauzengegend über und beim myomorphen Typ sind die Umgestaltungen des sciuromorphen und des hystricomorphen Typs miteinander kombiniert. Der sciuromorphe, der hystricomorphe und der myomorphe Typ dienten einst als Grundlage für die Unterteilung der Nagetiere in Unterordnungen. Sie wurden jedoch mehrfach unabhängig voneinander erworben und werden heute nur noch als wichtige beschreibende Begriffe ohne systematische Bedeutung verwendet.
