The topographer is a profession in cartography and geodesy. It deals with the creation and updating of topographic maps, which can be carried out terrestrially, on the other hand with photogrammetry or satellite remote sensing. The name is derived from the ancient Greek term τόπος for "place, position", supplemented by the suffix graph of the Greek word γραφειν for "draw, describe". Etymologically, this is precisely the nature of the topographical activity: on the one hand, the description of the terrain and the place, and, on the other hand, its technical implementation from a coordinatively established point of view. Over such measurement points or passpoints or other measurement points determined, for example, with alignment, A measuring table placed on a tripod and on the plane of which the map base or a sketch of the terrain mapped. With this simple and fast method, the topographer could enter all those additions to the card, which seem to be essential for the respective map scale.

Der Topograf ist ein Berufszweig in der Kartografie und Geodäsie. Er befasst sich mit der Erstellung und Aktualisierung topografischer Karten, was einerseits terrestrisch erfolgen kann, andererseits mit Messbildern der Fotogrammetrie oder der Satelliten-Fernerkundung. Der Name leitet sich vom altgriechischen Begriff τόπος für „Ort, Standpunkt“ ab, ergänzt um die Nachsilbe graf vom griech.Zeitwort γραφειν für „zeichnen, beschreiben“. Etymologisch trifft dies genau das Wesen der topografischen Tätigkeit: einerseits die Gelände- und Ortsbeschreibung, andererseits deren technische Durchführung von einem koordinativ eingemesenen Standpunkt aus. Über solchen Vermessungs- oder Passpunkten bzw. sonstigen - etwa mit Alignement festgelegten - Messpunkten wurde bis etwa 1950 z.B. ein Messtisch auf einem Stativ aufgestellt und auf dessen Ebene die Kartengrundlage bzw. eine Skizze des Geländes kartiert. Mit dieser einfachen und schnellen Methode konnte der Topograf alle jene Ergänzungen in die Karte eintragen, die ihm für den jeweiligen Kartenmaßstab wesentlich erscheinen.
