undulation

Undulation

Undulation or undulation means a wave-like deflection of the body when swimming. A colloquial expression for this is Delfin wave. In the dolphin swimming style, the undulation is the main component of the movement in addition to the arm and leg movements; But also in the case of breast swimming, this technique is becoming increasingly prevalent in the top level. What is striking here is the up and down of the upper body during swimming, which resembles a snake waving horizontally to the water surface. In the dolphin, crawl and back swimming, it is allowed during the competition to dive up to 15 m with the aid of the dolphin wave after each turn and after the start under water. Skiers are faster in this way than if they were swimming in a conventional way. In the case of breast swimming, since 1 January 2006 it has been permitted to carry out exactly one dolphin after the start and each turn.
