Vexillum

The vexillum was one of the landmarks of the Roman army. The vexillum of cloth was the only one of the Roman signs, and is therefore the forerunner of today's flags and flags. The square piece of fabric hung from a cross-piece, which was fastened to a support rod. The folk cloth was usually red-colored and showed in part inscriptions and pictorial representations. The vexillum was used by a variety of units, including the legionary cavalry and auxiliary units, and secondly, temporary detachments, which were also referred to as vexillatio. Probably the vexillum was also one of the three main field signs of the whole legion, besides Legionadler and imago. The vexillum also served as a signal flag. It was given to high-ranking officers as a military distinction, B. Marcus Agrippa. B. Marcus Agrippa.
