Chelation

Chelation describes a particular way that ions and molecules bind metal ions. According to the International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry, chelation involves the formation or presence of two or more separate coordinate bonds between a polydentate ligand and a single central atom. Usually these ligands are organic compounds, and are called chelants, chelators, chelating agents, or sequestering agents.

Definition of chelate in the English dictionary

The first definition of chelate in the dictionary is a coordination compound in which a metal atom or ion is bound to a ligand at two or more points on the ligand, so as to form a heterocyclic ring containing a metal atom. Other definition of chelate is of or possessing chelae. Chelate is also of or denoting a chelate.
