By August 2008, we had left Voikovskaya and moved into a wooden dacha in the artists' colony of Sokol in north-west Moscow. The house was a haven amid the madness of the city: lily of the valley grew near our front gate, Virginia creeper decked the green picket fence.

WHAT DOES DACHA MEAN IN ENGLISH?

dacha

Dacha

Dacha (Russian: да́ча, IPA: ( listen), from the verb "дать" - "to give") is a Russian word for seasonal or year-round second homes often located in the exurbs of Russian and post-Soviet cities. Cottages or shacks serving as a family's main or only home (or districts of such buildings) are not considered dachas, although many purpose-built dachas are recently being converted for year-round residence. In some cases, dachas are occupied for part of the year by their owners and rented out to urban residents as summer retreats. Dachas on the Volga river. Most dacha areas have existed since the Soviet era and consist of numerous small (typicallly 600 square meter ) land plots. They were initially designated only for recreation getaways of city dwellers and for the purpose of growing little gardens. They were extremely popular because the soviet people did not have an opportunity to buy land and build a house where they wanted, and also because they lacked other opportunities to spend their time and money. There were legal size restrictions for dacha houses.
