WHAT DOES EMPIRE MEAN IN ENGLISH?

Empire

The term empire derives from the Latin imperium. Politically, an empire is a geographically extensive group of states and peoples united and ruled by a central authority either by a monarch or an oligarchy. Aside from the traditional usage, the term empire can be used in an extended sense to denote a large-scale business enterprise, or a political organisation of either national-, regional- or city scale, controlled either by a person or a group authority. An imperial political structure is established and maintained in two ways: as a territorial empire of direct conquest and control with force or as a coercive, hegemonic empire of indirect conquest and control with power. The former provides greater tribute and direct political control, yet limits further expansion because it absorbs military forces to fixed garrisons. The latter provides less tribute and indirect control, but avails military forces for further expansion. Territorial empires tended to be contiguous areas. The term on occasion has been applied to maritime empires or thalassocracies, with looser structures and more scattered territories.

Definition of empire in the English dictionary

The first definition of empire in the dictionary is an aggregate of peoples and territories, often of great extent, under the rule of a single person, oligarchy, or sovereign state. Other definition of empire is any monarchy that for reasons of history, prestige, etc, has an emperor rather than a king as head of state. Empire is also the period during which a particular empire exists.
