WHAT DOES EPISTASIS MEAN IN ENGLISH?

Epistasis

Epistasis is when the effect of one gene depends on the presence of one or more 'modifier genes'. Similarly, epistatic mutations have different effects in combination than individually. It was originally a concept from genetics but is now used in biochemistry, population genetics, computational biology and evolutionary biology. It arises due to interactions, either between genes, or within them leading to non-additive effects. Epistasis has a large influence on the shape of evolutionary landscapes which leads to profound consequences for evolution and evolvability of traits.

Definition of epistasis in the English dictionary

The first definition of epistasis in the dictionary is scum on the surface of a liquid, esp on an old specimen of urine. Other definition of epistasis is the arrest or checking of a bodily discharge, esp bleeding. Epistasis is also Also called: hypostasis the suppression by a gene of the effect of another gene that is not its allele.
