WHAT DOES FELL-WALKING MEAN IN ENGLISH?

fell-walking

Hillwalking

Hillwalking or fellwalking are terms sometimes used in the United Kingdom and the Republic of Ireland for walks or hikes undertaken in upland country, moorland, and mountains, that often include climbing a summit. Though hillwalking can entail scrambling in order to reach a mountain summit, it is not mountaineering. In Canada, the USA and South Africa it is called hiking, in New Zealand tramping, while Australians tend to call it walking or bushwalking. Backpacking or walking tours can also involve hillwalking. Fellwalking is a word used specifically to refer to hill or mountain walking in Northern England, including the Lake District, Lancashire, especially the Forest of Bowland, and the Yorkshire Dales, where fell is a dialect word for high, uncultivated land.
