Geocarpy is most frequent in tropical or semi-desert areas, and geocarpic species may be found in the families Araceae, Begoniaceae, Brassicaceae, Callitrichaceae, Convolvulaceae, Cucurbitaceae, Fabaceae, Loganiaceae, Moraceae and Rubiaceae. The best-known example is the peanut, Arachis hypogaea.
