To avoid the irregularity of time arising from the want of uniformity of the sun's
motion, a fictitious sun, called a mean sun, is supposed to move uniformly in the
ecliptic, at such a rate as to return to the perigee at the same time with the true
sun.
Since the sun has a movement relative to the celestial sphere and since it is not
uniform, it becomes necessary to assume a mean sun, a point travelling the
celestial equator at a uniform rate so as to make solar days of uniform length.
