very God—forsaken place. Early in our stay in Tashkent, Judy and I learned
about Nukus, a city in the western part of Uzbekistan on the border with
Turkmenistan.
The new line from Nukus to Navoi bypasses Turkmenistan, thus removing the
former need for a transit visa, and there are currently two services a week from
Nukus to Tashkent (22hrs; US$22). Tickets can be purchased at the station or
online.
