WHAT DOES PENICILLIN MEAN IN ENGLISH?

penicillin

Penicillin

Penicillin is a group of antibiotics derived from Penicillium fungi, including penicillin G, penicillin V, procaine penicillin, and benzathine penicillin. Penicillin antibiotics were among the first drugs to be effective against many previously serious diseases, such as infections caused by staphylococci and streptococci. Penicillins are still widely used today, though misuse has now made many types of bacteria resistant. All penicillins are β-lactam antibiotics and are used in the treatment of bacterial infections caused by susceptible, usually Gram-positive, organisms. Several enhanced penicillin families also exist, effective against additional bacteria: these include the antistaphylococcal penicillins, aminopenicillins and the more-powerful antipseudomonal penicillins.

Definition of penicillin in the English dictionary

The definition of penicillin in the dictionary is any of a group of antibiotics with powerful bactericidal action, used to treat many types of infections, including pneumonia, gonorrhoea, and infections caused by streptococci and staphylococci: originally obtained from the fungus Penicillium, esp P. notatum. Formula: R-C9H11N2O4S where R is one of several side chains.
