WHAT DOES SACBUT MEAN IN ENGLISH?

Sackbut

A sackbut is a trombone from the Renaissance and Baroque eras, i.e. a brass instrument, similar to the trombone and characterised by a telescopic slide with which the player varies the length of the tube to change pitches, thus allowing them to obtain chromaticism, as well as easy and accurate doubling of voices. Sackbuts could adjust tuning at the joint between the bell and slide. The sackbut differs from today's trombone by its smaller bore, its bell which is less flared, and in the lack of a water key, slide lock, and tuning slide on the bell curve. More delicately constructed than their modern counterparts, and featuring a softer, more flexible sound, they attracted a more sizeable repertoire of original chamber and vocal music than many instruments contemporary with them.
