WHAT DOES SANDALWOOD MEAN IN ENGLISH?

sandalwood

Sandalwood

Sandalwood is the name of a class of fragrant woods from trees in the genus Santalum. The woods are heavy, yellow, and fine-grained, and unlike many other aromatic woods, they retain their fragrance for decades. Sandalwood oil is extracted from the woods for use. Both the wood and the oil produce a distinctive fragrance that has been highly valued for centuries. Consequently, the slow-growing trees have been overharvested in many areas.

Definition of sandalwood in the English dictionary

The first definition of sandalwood in the dictionary is any of several evergreen hemiparasitic trees of the genus Santalum, esp S. album, of S Asia and Australia, having hard light-coloured heartwood: family Santalaceae. Other definition of sandalwood is the wood of any of these trees, which is used for carving, is burned as incense, and yields an aromatic oil used in perfumery. Sandalwood is also any of various similar trees or their wood, esp Pterocarpus santalinus, a leguminous tree of SE Asia having dark red wood used as a dye.
