WHAT DOES SINKHOLE MEAN IN ENGLISH?

sinkhole

Sinkhole

There are a large variety of depressions in the earths surface that have been labeled or described as a sinkhole. Further there is an assortment of names for these features, depending on the culture and language of the country where they have been described. Frequently in North America the term "sinkhole" is used to mean any hype of depression in the ground surface, regardless of its morphology or origin. A sinkhole, also known as a sink-hole, sink, swallow hole, shakehole, swallet or doline, is a naturally occurring depression or hole in the ground caused by gradual lowering of the surface material, or the instantaneous collapse of the surface layer, into conduits or caves developed in the underlying soluble rock. The depression can almost always be circumscribed by a closed topographic contour and are internally drained. Most are caused by karst processes—for example, the chemical dissolution of carbonate rocks or suffosion processes. Sinkholes may vary in size from 1 to 600 m both in diameter and depth, and vary in form from soil-lined bowls to bedrock-edged chasms.
