WHAT DOES SOLENOID MEAN IN ENGLISH?

Solenoid

A solenoid is a coil wound into a tightly packed helix. The term was invented by French physicist André-Marie Ampère to designate a helical coil. In physics, the term refers specifically to a long, thin loop of wire, often wrapped around a metallic core, which produces a uniform magnetic field in a volume of space when an electric current is passed through it. A solenoid is a type of electromagnet when the purpose is to generate a controlled magnetic field. If the purpose of the solenoid is instead to dampen changes in the electric current, a solenoid can be more specifically classified as an inductor rather than an electromagnet. Not all electromagnets and inductors are solenoids; for example, the first electromagnet, invented in 1824, had a horseshoe rather than a cylindrical solenoid shape. In engineering, the term may also refer to a variety of transducer devices that convert energy into linear motion.

Definition of solenoid in the English dictionary

The first definition of solenoid in the dictionary is a coil of wire, usually cylindrical, in which a magnetic field is set up by passing a current through it. Other definition of solenoid is a coil of wire, partially surrounding an iron core, that is made to move inside the coil by the magnetic field set up by a current: used to convert electrical to mechanical energy, as in the operation of a switch. Solenoid is also such a device used as a relay, as in a motor vehicle for connecting the battery directly to the starter motor when activated by the ignition switch.
