The winter solstice has always been special to me as a barren darkness that gives birth to a verdant future beyond imagination, a time of pain and withdrawal that produces something joyfully inconceivable, like a monarch butterfly masterfully extracting itself from the confines of its cocoon, bursting forth into unexpected glory.

WHAT DOES SOLSTICE MEAN IN ENGLISH?

solstice

Solstice

A solstice is an astronomical event that occurs twice each year as the Sun reaches its highest or lowest excursion relative to the celestial equator on the celestial sphere. The solstices, together with the equinoxes, are connected with the seasons. In many cultures the solstices mark either the beginning or the midpoint of winter and summer. The word solstice is derived from the Latin sol and sistere, because at the solstices, the Sun stands still in declination; that is, the seasonal movement of the Sun's path comes to a stop before reversing direction. At latitudes in the temperate zone, the summer solstice marks the day when the sun appears highest in the sky. However, in the tropics, the sun appears directly overhead some days before the solstice and again after the solstice, which means the subsolar point occurs twice each year. The term solstice can also be used in a broader sense, as the date when this occurs. The day of the solstice is either the longest day of the year or the shortest day of the year for any place outside of the tropics.

Definition of solstice in the English dictionary

The definition of solstice in the dictionary is either the shortest day of the year or the longest day of the year. Other definition of solstice is either of the two points on the ecliptic at which the sun is overhead at the tropic of Cancer or Capricorn at the summer and winter solstices.

Famous quotes and sentences with the word solstice.
1
David Icke
The Christian Bible is a symbolic book, not a literal one. The one Christians know as Jesus was actually a symbol for the sun. Ancient sun worshippers believed the sun died at the end of the winter solstice and then three days later it would be reborn at the start of its cycle - December 25.

Each solstice is a domain of experience unto itself. At the Summer solstice, all is green and growing, potential coming into being, the miracle of manifestation painted large on the canvas of awareness. At the Winter solstice, the wind is cold, trees are bare and all lies in stillness beneath blankets of snow.
