Time travel used to be thought of as just science fiction, but Einstein's general theory of relativity allows for the possibility that we could warp space-time so much that you could go off in a rocket and return before you set out.

WHAT DOES SPACE-TIME MEAN IN ENGLISH?

space-time

Spacetime

In physics, spacetime is any mathematical model that combines space and time into a single interwoven continuum. The spacetime of our universe is usually interpreted from a Euclidean space perspective, which regards space as consisting of three dimensions, and time as consisting of one dimension, the 'fourth dimension'. By combining space and time into a single manifold called Minkowski space, physicists have significantly simplified a large number of physical theories, as well as described in a more uniform way the workings of the universe at both the supergalactic and subatomic levels. In non-relativistic classical mechanics, the use of Euclidean space instead of spacetime is appropriate, as time is treated as universal and constant, being independent of the state of motion of an observer. In relativistic contexts, time cannot be separated from the three dimensions of space, because the observed rate at which time passes for an object depends on the object's velocity relative to the observer and also on the strength of gravitational fields, which can slow the passage of time for an object as seen by an observer outside the field.

Definition of space-time in the English dictionary

The definition of space-time in the dictionary is the four-dimensional continuum having three spatial coordinates and one time coordinate that together completely specify the location of a particle or an event.

David Deutsch
The brain is the only kind of object capable of understanding that the cosmos is even there, or why there are infinitely many prime numbers, or that apples fall because of the curvature of space-time, or that obeying its own inborn instincts can be morally wrong, or that it itself exists.

Time travel used to be thought of as just science fiction, but Einstein's general theory of relativity allows for the possibility that we could warp space-time so much that you could go off in a rocket and return before you set out.
3
Janna Levin
Black holes can bang against space-time as mallets on a drum and have a very characteristic song.
4
Antony Garrett Lisi
I think the universe is pure geometry - basically, a beautiful shape twisting around and dancing over space-time.
5
Clifford D. Simak
It was a place without a single feature of the space-time matrix that he knew. It was a place where nothing yet had happened - an utter emptiness. There was neither light nor dark: there was nothing here but emptiness.
6
George Smoot
I always think of space-time as being the real substance of space, and the galaxies and the stars just like the foam on the ocean.
7
Patrick Stewart
I wouldn't know a space-time continuum or warp core breach if they got into bed with me.
8
N. T. Wright
Western Christians have imagined that, at the end of the day, God is going to throw the present space-time universe into a trashcan and we'll be sitting on clouds playing harps. The ultimate future that we're promised is much more interesting than that. It's new heavens and a new Earth with new bodies to live in.
