A suffragan bishop is a bishop subordinate to a metropolitan bishop or diocesan bishop. They may be assigned to an area which does not have a cathedral of its own.

Definition of suffragan in the English dictionary

The first definition of suffragan in the dictionary is subordinate to and assisting his superior archbishop or metropolitan. Other definition of suffragan is having the duty of assisting the bishop of the diocese to which he is appointed but having no ordinary jurisdiction in that diocese. Suffragan is also a suffragan bishop.
