Swarf, also known as chips or by other process-specific names, is pieces of metal, wood, or plastic that are the debris or waste resulting from machining, woodworking, or similar subtractive manufacturing processes. Swarf or chips can be small particles; long, stringy tendrils; slag-like waste; or stone fragments and dust. Some of these terms are mass nouns and some of them are count nouns. Definition of swarf in the English dictionary

The first definition of swarf in the dictionary is material removed by cutting or grinding tools in the machining of metals, stone, etc. Other definition of swarf is radioactive metal waste from a nuclear power station. Swarf is also small fragments of disintegrating spacecraft, orbiting the earth.
