Under these laws sweepstakes became strictly "No Purchase Necessary", removing the consideration to stop abuse of sweepstakes. Today, sweepstakes in the USA are used as marketing promotions to reward existing consumers, and to draw attention to a product.

Definition of sweepstake in the English dictionary

The first definition of sweepstake in the dictionary is a lottery in which the stakes of the participants constitute the prize. Other definition of sweepstake is the prize itself. Sweepstake is also any event involving a lottery, esp a horse race in which the prize is the competitors' stakes.
