Route map: Google / Bing Template:Attached_KML/Bowery For other uses, see Bowery. Looking north from Grand Street, circa 1910 The Bowery is a street and neighborhood in the southern portion of the New York City borough of Manhattan. The street runs from Chatham Square at Park Row, Worth Street, and Mott Street in the south to Cooper Square at 4th Street in the north, while the neighborhood's boundaries are roughly East 4th Street and the East Village to the north; Canal Street and Chinatown to the south; Allen Street and the Lower East Side to the east; and Little Italy to the west. In the 17th century, the road branched off Broadway north of Fort Amsterdam at the tip of Manhattan to the homestead of Peter Stuyvesant, Director-General of New Netherland. The street was known as Bowery Lane prior to 1807. "Bowery" is an anglicisation of the Dutch bouwerij, derived from an antiquated Dutch word for "farm", as in the 17th century, the area contained many large farms. A New York City Subway station named Bowery, serving the BMT Nassau Street Line is located close to Bowery's intersection with Delancey and Kenmare Streets.

5 QUOTES WITH «THE BOWERY»

Famous quotes and sentences with the word the Bowery.
1
Ben Brantley
It's nowhere near as intense as what I imagine an actor experiences backstage, but I feel a fluttering nervousness before a curtain goes up on a play. I mean, any play, anywhere - on Broadway or the Bowery or in a church basement.
2
Randy Owen
The Bowery was a place that would let us do original songs - not just covers - but we would have to work for tips, so we learned how to work an audience. In order to keep our jobs, we had to keep people happy, so that meant playing the latest Lynyrd Skynyrd and ZZ Top or Merle Haggard.
3
Richard Phillips
There was a belief after World War I that painting could be an act of civil revolt. I want this exhibition, 'New Museum,' to be an act of civil disobedience. It's not so much about the New Museum on the Bowery, but the idea of challenging museums as projections of cultural authority. It's painting as insurgency.
4
Charles Soule
We'll see She-Hulk fighting evil everywhere from the boardroom to the Bowery, using her mind as much as her fists.
5
Stephen Sprouse
Then I moved down to the Bowery to this building where Debbie Harry lived. It was there that I started combining some clothes for her and continued doing the art and photography.
