Caudata

The caudates, known as salamanders, are a clade of amphibians composed of more than 650 living species that are distributed in the continents of the northern hemisphere with the exception of a few species in the north of South America. A third of the known salamanders live in North America. The highest concentration occurs in the Appalachian Mountains region. Unlike anurans, they have a well-developed tail and lack the middle ear. The earliest records of salamanders date from the mid-Jurassic period, with the species Chunerpeton tianyiensis being the oldest representative of modern salamanders. The latest molecular studies date the divergence with respect to frogs in the Permian period. The salamander is a mythological monster and basic symbol of alchemy. He is supposed to be able to resist and even put out the most ardent fires. The origin of this myth could originate in its amphibious condition, and that as such, it lives part of its life in the water and part in the earth, in particular in zones moist like forests.
