Coastline (geography)

Litoral (geografía)

Coastal environments are transitional areas between terrestrial and marine systems. Conceptually they are ecotones, ecological borders that are characterized by intense processes of exchange of matter and energy. They are very dynamic ecosystems, in constant evolution and change. Of the reasons that influence in the considerable dynamism of the coast emphasize the dominant geomorphological processes, that differentiate two types of coast, erosion and sedimentation. The high contributions of sediments, organic and inorganic matter from watersheds, produce a fertilizer effect on the coast that determines high rates of productivity and contributes to the maintenance of food webs. The variety and uniqueness of the ecosystems that make up the coast make it an area of high ecological value, with considerable biological diversity.
