Extremism and extremism are terms used to describe actions, ideologies, individuals, groups, institutions, agents, parties or political movements that are situated, either to themselves or by those who describe them, far removed from the political center or the social space of consensus . In democratic political societies and regimes, extremism is associated with the substitution of democracy for authoritarianism or totalitarianism at one extreme or another on the political spectrum. At a juncture of revolution the opposing extremisms are identified, respectively, with the revolutionaries and the reactionaries. In religious terms one speaks of fundamentalism or fanaticism, terms that also apply in political contexts. One of the main features of extremism is its relation to the use or justification of political violence, with different forms of terrorism or political repression. The term is almost always used in a pejorative way, preferring those branded extremists other qualifying, as radical, pure, or even anti-system.

Extremismo y extremista son términos usados para describir acciones, ideologías, individuos, grupos, instituciones, agentes, partidos o movimientos políticos que se sitúan, bien a sí mismos o bien por quien los describe, muy alejados del centro político o del espacio social del consenso. En las sociedades y regímenes políticos democráticos el extremismo se asocia a la sustitución de la democracia por el autoritarismo o totalitarismo en un extremo u otro del espectro político. En una coyuntura de revolución los extremismos contrapuestos se identifican, respectivamente, con los revolucionarios y los reaccionarios. En términos religiosos se habla de fundamentalismo o fanatismo, términos que también se aplican en contextos políticos. Uno de los principales rasgos del extremismo es su relación con la utilización o justificación de la violencia política, con diferentes formas de terrorismo o de represión política. El término casi siempre se utiliza de forma peyorativa, prefiriendo los tildados de extremistas otros calificativos, como radicales, puros, o incluso antisistema.
