godo

Gothic town

Pueblo godo

The Goths were one of the groups belonging to the eastern Germanic peoples and one of the many tribes on the other side of the eastern border that the Romans called barbarian or Germanic. Probably its origin is in Götaland, which is today the south of Sweden, although for some authors its origin is Baltic, but not of the Scandinavian peninsula. They were one of the original Germanic peoples of Scandinavia who, by expanding Europe, threatened the power of the Roman Empire. During the third century they were divided into two independent tribes: the Greutungos and the Tervingians. Both maintained contacts and specific alliances. Many remains of the Goths have been found in present-day Poland, where they remained for centuries and would reach the Ukrainian plains.
